Rooted in Community: The Families Behind Great Hearts Harveston

Many of our parents can likely relate to the bold “leap” that Laura Metcalf, a parent of a first grader at Great Hearts Harveston, made when she decided to enroll her child in a brand-new public charter school in its second year.

GIVE TO GREAT HEARTS HARVESTON

The Metcalf family, previously enrolled in a private school in Baton Rouge, stumbled upon our classical model and were immediately drawn to the curriculum’s depth and richness. Like many families, they fell in love with the emphasis on the timeless ideals of truth, goodness, and beauty, as well as its exposure to classic works of literature, art, and music.

“I knew my daughter would never have had exposure to such a rich curriculum at her previous school,” says Mrs. Metcalf. “It’s been incredible to watch her experience the joy of reading these classic stories, many of which I grew up with.”

Her daughter’s favorite story to read in class is Thumbelina, a beloved tale that also holds a special place in her grandmother’s heart. “It’s amazing to see how stories like these can be passed down through generations,” Laura adds. “It really is a testament to classical literature and how it can be shared through generations and withstand the test of time.”

Mrs. Metcalf recognizes that the success of our school depends on the collective involvement of families, faculty, and staff working together to build something truly special.

As active members of the Parent Service Organization (PSO) and passionate supporters of our Community Investment Fund, the Metcalf family understands the importance of parental engagement.

“I believe that communities thrive when individuals are good stewards of their time, talent, and resources,” says Laura. “There are so many ways to get involved here—whether it’s volunteering for events, donating snacks, or simply offering your support in small ways. The more people who contribute, the better this community will be.”

As a tuition-free academy, we rely on the generosity and involvement of our families to ensure our students receive an exceptional education. Our Community Investment Fund directly supports critical areas like class materials,  faculty development, and extracurricular opportunities that make our school a thriving, vibrant place for students to learn and grow.

“The greatest gift we can give our children is the hope for a bright future,” says Mrs. Metcalf. “We want them to grow up in a wonderful community, one where they can develop into great thinkers and compassionate citizens who will go on to make the world around them a better place. That’s why it’s so important to invest in this school.”

This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to join the Metcalf family in supporting Great Hearts Harveston through the Community Investment Fund. Your contribution, no matter the size, will help sustain the kind of education that shapes not only students’ minds, but also their hearts.
